Following major ecological disasters—such as the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill—wild seabird populations can be entirely wiped out from historical breeding cliffs. Seabirds are highly social, colonial nesters. They rely on “social attraction”: a passing puffin or murre looking for a place to nest will rarely land on a barren, empty cliff face. They seek the safety and validation of an active, bustling colony.

To trick wild birds into returning to and recolonizing these abandoned or devastated habitats, the avian conservation team at the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) utilizes a highly specialized, fascinating technique that blends rigorous behavioral biology with fine art: hand-painted social attraction decoys.

The Psychology of Social Attraction

Seabirds possess highly developed visual systems, capable of identifying subtle details in color, plumage patterns, and physical posture from significant distances while flying over the ocean.

To successfully construct a mock colony, researchers deploy resin puffin and common murre decoys along remote coastal nesting ledges. However, simple plastic models are quickly ignored by wild birds. The decoys must be painted with extreme, lifelike accuracy to withstand the critical scrutiny of wild seabirds.

The Art: Capturing Specific Eye Lines and Plumage

ASLC researchers spend hours meticulously hand-painting each decoy, paying close attention to species-specific visual keys:

  • Eye Lines: Realistic eye rings and orbital lines. For common murres, capturing the exact dark, blended line behind the eye is crucial for visual validation.
  • Blended Plumage: Rather than applying flat colors, painters use fine airbrushing and dry-brushing techniques to replicate the natural, oily sheen of seabird feathers and the subtle gradient transitions from deep charcoal to snow-white.
  • Bill Coloration: The bright orange and yellow bills of puffins are painted with multiple layers to capture the realistic translucent qualities of wild keratin.

Audio and Mirror Amplification

Decoys are only one part of the social attraction array. To complete the illusion, ASLC teams deploy solar-powered acoustic playback systems that continuously broadcast the vocalizations, grunts, and calls of a healthy, active nesting colony.

In some restoration sites, researchers also install high-durability marine-grade mirrors along the cliff faces. When a passing bird approaches, it sees its own movement reflected, translating it as an active, living colony member nearby.

Measurable Restoration Success

This innovative combination of art and science has yielded remarkable conservation victories. In several historical nesting sites in the Gulf of Alaska that were devastated by oil spills or invasive predators, the deployment of ASLC decoy arrays successfully attracted wild common murres and puffins within their first season of deployment.

Once a few pioneer pairs land, lay eggs, and successfully rear chicks, their physical presence naturally takes over the social attraction role, enabling the decoy arrays to be retrieved and deployed to the next restoration site.
