On July 22, 2024, the Alaska SeaLife Center led the intensive care effort for a rare orphaned Pacific walrus calf rescued from Utqiagvik, Alaska. Just a few weeks old, the female calf was abandoned after her herd departed.
This united effort showcased the power of collaboration in wildlife conservation and the dedication of AZA-accredited institutions to protect marine wildlife while deepening our understanding of these remarkable animals.
Extreme Tactile Care Requirements
Unlike harbor seals, which can be rehabilitated in groups with minimal human interaction to prevent imprinting, walrus calves are highly social, maternal, and psychologically sensitive. In the wild, they spend their first two years in constant physical contact with their mothers.
To replicate this, Uki requires 24/7 tactile comfort from our dedicated team of human surrogates. A volunteer or staff member is in the enclosure at all times, providing physical contact and reassurance to prevent stress-induced metabolic crashes.

- Diet: Specialized walrus calf formula containing milk replacer, whipping cream, vitamins, and electrolytes, delivered via bottle every 3 hours
A National Coalition
Because walrus rehabilitations are incredibly resource-intensive, a national coalition of marine mammal experts from partner AZA-accredited facilities—including SeaWorld, Shedd Aquarium, and Monterey Bay Aquarium—mobilized to Seward to assist our resident staff in rotating shifts.
