Pacific Salmon

Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are among the most ecologically and culturally significant animals in Alaska. Five species of Pacific salmon inhabit Alaska’s waters: Chinook (King), Coho (Silver), Sockeye (Red), Pink (Humpy), and Chum (Dog). Their annual spawning migrations connect the ocean to the land in one of the most dramatic natural events on Earth.

The Journey

Salmon are anadromous — born in freshwater, they spend years maturing in the ocean before returning to the exact stream where they hatched to spawn and die. The precision of this navigation — using Earth’s magnetic field, celestial cues, and olfactory imprinting to their birth stream — remains one of science’s great mysteries.

During the spawning migration, salmon stop eating and draw on their ocean-fattened energy reserves. Males develop hooked jaws (kypes) and vivid coloration. After spawning, adults die — their decaying bodies delivering marine-derived nutrients (including nitrogen and phosphorus from the ocean) deep into Alaska’s forests and streams.

A single spawning salmon can feed up to 137 species of animals and plants.

Salmon as Ecosystem Infrastructure

Salmon are more than a species — they are a biological conveyor belt that connects ocean and land ecosystems:

  • Bears, wolves, eagles: Primary consumers of spawning salmon
  • Stream insects, fungi, plants: Fed by decaying salmon carcasses
  • Old-growth forests: Nutrient-subsidized by salmon-derived nitrogen detectable in tree rings dating centuries
  • Ocean productivity: Juvenile salmon feeding on zooplankton connect freshwater and marine food webs

Climate Threat

Alaska’s salmon runs are under increasing pressure from:

  • Ocean warming: Disrupting marine prey availability during ocean residence
  • Freshwater warming: Affecting egg survival and alevin development
  • Extreme rain events: Scouring spawning beds
  • Permafrost thaw: Changing stream chemistry and turbidity

The Alaska SeaLife Center’s research program monitors salmon ecosystem interactions, including the downstream effects of salmon decline on marine predators like Steller sea lions and orcas.
